What is Surya Kundali?
Surya Kundali, also called the Surya lagna chart or the Sun chart, is the birth chart redrawn with the sign occupied by the Sun treated as the first house. Every planet keeps the sign and degree it held at birth; what changes is the point from which the twelve houses are counted. If the Sun is in Leo, Leo becomes the first house of the Surya Kundali, Virgo the second, Libra the third, and so through the zodiac.
This makes it a change of viewpoint, not a new calculation. The Surya Kundali uses the same planetary longitudes as the rashi chart, so in Vedic it is derived alongside the birth chart from a single set of computed positions rather than from any additional input.
The Three Reference Points
Parashara's instruction, repeated throughout the later literature, is to examine every house from three reference points: the ascendant, the Moon and the Sun. Each carries a distinct sense. The ascendant is the physical body and the outward circumstances of life. The Moon is manas, the mind, and shows how those circumstances are experienced. The Sun is atman in the sense used by the tradition — the self, vitality, authority, the father, and the person's essential standing.
The practical rule that follows is one of confirmation. A result indicated from all three references is considered far more likely to manifest than one visible from a single chart. Where the three disagree, the tradition does not average them; it reads the ascendant chart for the fact of the matter, the Moon chart for how it is felt, and the Sun chart for what it does to the person's position and self-regard.
What the Sun Chart Shows
- Vitality and constitution — the Sun signifies life force, so its chart is read for physical strength and resilience.
- Authority and status — recognition, position, government and dealings with superiors are natural Sun matters and appear here.
- The father — the Sun is the traditional significator of the father, and the Surya Kundali is one of the frames used for paternal matters, alongside the ninth house and the D12 Dwadasamsa.
- Ego and self-expression — how a person asserts themselves and wishes to be seen.
- Combustion effects — planets close to the Sun in longitude are astangata, combust, and the Sun chart places that relationship in the first house where it is immediately visible.
The Surya Kundali is also the point at which Vedic and Western practice come closest. A Western chart read from the Sun sign resembles this arrangement structurally, though the two traditions use different zodiacs — Vedic astrology the sidereal, Western the tropical — so the Sun sign itself frequently differs between them. The current difference is roughly 24 degrees, which usually shifts a placement back by about one sign. Values can be compared on the ayanamsha calculator.
Reading the Sun Chart in Practice
- Note the Sun's sign in the birth chart; this becomes the first house of the Surya Kundali.
- Recount every planet's house position from that sign, leaving signs and degrees untouched.
- Compare the result with the ascendant chart and the Moon chart, marking the houses where two or three agree.
- Read matters of authority, health and the father with particular attention to this frame.
- Attach timing through the dasha periods, since a change of reference point supplies emphasis but not dates.
One clarification is worth stating plainly: the Surya Kundali is not a divisional chart. Vargas such as the Navamsa or Dasamsa subdivide each sign arithmetically and place planets into genuinely new signs. The Sun chart subdivides nothing. It is the same chart counted from a different first house, in exactly the way the Chandra Kundali is counted from the Moon. The underlying house meanings are unchanged and can be reviewed on the house significations page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Surya Kundali the same as my Western Sun sign chart?
Structurally they are similar, since both count houses from the Sun's sign. The zodiacs differ, however: Vedic astrology measures against the fixed stars while Western astrology measures from the equinox, and the two are currently about 24 degrees apart. As a result the Sun sign itself is often one sign earlier in a Vedic chart.
Can I use the Sun chart if my birth time is unknown?
To a degree. The Sun stays in a sign for about a month, so its sign is secure even with a substantial error in the recorded time. Its exact degree, house positions of the faster bodies and the ascendant will still be unreliable, so the reading is necessarily broader than one built on an accurate time.
Which chart takes precedence when the three disagree?
The ascendant chart is generally treated as primary for physical and material events. The Moon chart is preferred for mental experience and for transit reading, and the Sun chart for vitality, authority and paternal matters. Rather than choosing between them, classical practice weights an indication by how many of the three confirm it.
Does the Surya Kundali change any planetary positions?
No. Signs, degrees, nakshatras and aspects are identical to the birth chart. Only the house numbering shifts, because counting begins from the Sun's sign. In Vedic the Sun chart and the birth chart are generated from the same computed longitudes, and both can be produced from the Kundali section.
