What Are Retrograde Planets?
A planet is retrograde (Vakri in Sanskrit) when it appears to move backwards through the zodiac as seen from Earth. The motion is apparent rather than real: it happens when Earth and the other planet pass each other in their orbits, much as a slower car appears to drift backwards when you overtake it. Every planet except the Sun and Moon goes retrograde periodically.
In Vedic astrology, retrograde planets are considered to gain strength — Cheshta Bala, or motional strength, peaks during retrogression — while expressing their significations in a more internalised, reflective or delayed way.
How Often Each Planet Turns Retrograde
- Mercury — about three or four times a year, for roughly three weeks each time. The most frequently discussed retrograde.
- Venus — approximately every 18 months, for about 40 days.
- Mars — approximately every 26 months, for 60 to 80 days.
- Jupiter — once a year, for about four months.
- Saturn — once a year, for roughly four and a half months.
- Rahu and Ketu — the lunar nodes are always in retrograde motion, moving backwards continuously through the zodiac.
The Sun and Moon are never retrograde. Because the outer planets spend months of each year retrograde, at any given moment it is common for two or three planets to be retrograde simultaneously.
Retrograde Motion in Interpretation
A retrograde planet is traditionally read as turning its energy inward. Rather than being simply "bad", it suggests review, revision and return — matters connected to that planet tend to resurface, slow down, or require a second pass.
- Mercury retrograde — communication, contracts, travel arrangements and technology are the classical areas for review and double-checking.
- Venus retrograde — relationships, values and aesthetic matters; past connections often resurface.
- Mars retrograde — action, energy and initiative are turned inward; a period associated with reconsidering rather than launching.
- Jupiter retrograde — belief, philosophy and growth are internalised and re-examined.
- Saturn retrograde — responsibility, structure and discipline come up for reassessment.
Retrograde Planets in a Birth Chart
A planet retrograde at the moment of birth carries this quality throughout life rather than for a passing period. Such a planet is often described as expressing itself less outwardly, with its significations developing later or through repeated effort. Generate your Janam Kundali to see which planets were retrograde at your birth — they are marked in the planetary positions table.
Using This Retrograde Calculator
The calculator shows which planets are currently retrograde, together with upcoming retrograde and direct stations. Positions are computed with the Swiss Ephemeris, so station dates are astronomically precise. Note that a planet slows to a near halt before changing direction — this stationary phase is traditionally considered the most pronounced part of the cycle.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Mercury retrograde right now?
The table above shows current retrograde status for every planet, along with the exact dates each station begins and ends. Mercury retrogrades three or four times a year for about three weeks at a time.
Are retrograde planets bad?
Not in classical Vedic terms. Retrograde planets gain Cheshta Bala, a form of strength, and a retrograde benefic can be quite favourable. The interpretation is about direction and timing — inward, delayed, revisited — rather than about good or bad outcomes.
Why are Rahu and Ketu always retrograde?
Rahu and Ketu are not physical bodies but the two points where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic. These points drift steadily backwards through the zodiac, completing a full cycle in about 18.6 years, so they are always described as retrograde.
Should I avoid signing contracts during Mercury retrograde?
Traditional guidance advises extra care with agreements, communication and travel plans during these periods rather than avoiding them outright. In practice most astrologers weigh the whole chart and the relevant dasha before treating a transit as decisive.
